How to Read a Motorcycle Chain Size

A chain size like "520" is three digits that encode two measurements:

• First digit (5) - the pitch, in eighths of an inch. "5" means 5/8 inch pitch.
• Second and third digits (20) - the roller width, also in eighths of an inch. "20" means 2.0/8 inch (1/4 inch) width.

So a 520 chain has 5/8" pitch and 1/4" width, while a 530 chain has the same 5/8" pitch but a wider 3/8" roller.
